Use of Specimens

Visitors will note that the angiosperms are arranged according to Cronquist's 1981 system. Visitors may pick up a sheet that details the color-coded geographic folder scheme used to arrange specimens within each genus. All users of the collection, both visitors and those using borrowed specimens, are asked to observe standard procedures of handling herbarium specimens. Do not turn the sheets in a folder like the pages of a book. Do not turn specimens upside-down. Use care to prevent pieces of material from being dislodged and place any loose material in the packet on the sheet. If specimens in need of repair are noticed, please put them aside for the curator to process.

Fragments of specimens are not to be removed without the prior permission of the curator. This includes material for extraction of chemical constituents and DNA. Permission for such removal is only granted when the specimen comprises sufficient material that the action will not diminish the subsequent value of the specimen. Fragment packets will be provided to contain any loose material, if they are not already on the sheet.

Annotations should be written legibly in permanent ink on the labels provided, or may be made with preprinted archival labels. The annotation label should be affixed above the specimen label with glue that will be provided. If there is not sufficient space above the specimen label, then another location as near the bottom of the sheet as possible should be chosen. Annotation labels must not cover other labels, writing, or portions of the plant material.
